Sara Smile

Baby hair with a woman's eyes

I can feel you watching in the night

All alone with me and we're waiting for the sunlight

When I feel cold you warm me

When I feel I can't go on you come and hold me

It's you... And me forever

Sara Smile

Won't you smile a while for me Sara

If you feel like leaving you know you can go

But why don't you stay until tomorrow?

If you want to be free, you know all you have to do is say so

And when you feel cold, I'll warm you

And when you feel you can't go on, I'll come and hold you

It's you... And me forever

Sara Smile

Won't you smile a while for me Sara

That April, Daryl opened his sketchbook and began to write simple, straightforward lines about Sandy Allen, with whom he was growing ever more involved. Before long, these lines would become a song by him and John, and that song would become something that neither of them envisioned.

Meanwhile, something strange had happened in Cleveland, Ohio. In January 1976, a WIMO disc jockey named Lynn Tolliver had played "Sara Smile" as an album cut. The station subsequently received more than two hundred calls requesting to hear the song again. The RCA field representative for the Columbus-Cleveland area, Hank Zaremski, phoned RCA headquarters in New York and urgently advised that "Sara Smile" be released as a single. RCA listened, and on the last day of January, "Sara Smile" appeared on the national pop charts.

Within three days, "Sara Smile" was to be heard more and more on the air. Eventually, it hit Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100, and Number 23 on the R&B charts. Riding it, the silver album remained on the charts for more than seven months.
